Records obtained by Judicial Watch under the Freedom of Information Act show 47 deaths and thousands of serious adverse events associated with Gardasil.

Last year, clinic staff and family members told the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the Gardasil vaccine was responsible for 28 deaths of girls and young women.

The deaths included several girls ages 11 and 12 who had no existing medical conditions prior to receiving the vaccine. In some cases, the girls died within three days of receiving one shot of the vaccine. Others died following their third Gardasil injection. Several died in their sleep.

Gardasil is a vaccine marketed by the pharmaceutical company Merck and recommended by U.S. public health authorities for the prevention of human papillomavirus (HPV) in girls and young women. HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer in women.

Gardasil has been implicated in 47 deaths since gaining FDA approval in 2006, according to data voluntarily submitted to the FDA by physicians, hospital staff and family members.

FDA records also show 6,723 "adverse events" were reported following Gardasil vaccinations in 2008, ranging from genital and facial warts and permanent disability to cervical cancer and Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

Of the total 47 reported deaths, 41 occurred within a month of receiving the vaccine.

The FDA’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) records, a voluntary reporting system, were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by Judicial Watch, a government watchdog group.

The following are several "adverse events" documented in the FDA records:

 • "15 months from the completion of the GARDASIL HPV vaccination, I had full blown cervical cancer. My oncologist would like to do a hysterectomy at this time, but [as I have] always wanted children, I have chosen to wait . . . I have two of the [strains] that the shot is suppose to prevent . . . I now have cervical cancer and I am left wondering what role the GARDASIL HPV vaccination played in the hasty onset." (ID: 319836)
 • "After receiving her second dose of GARDASIL … she could crawl but … needed to use crutches or a wheel chair ... She was experienced problems breathing and had ‘super migraines' that never went away … She had swelling in her face, jaw and wrists. The patient was diagnosed with GUILLAIN-BARRE syndrome, myelin sheath degeneration and peripheral neuropathy. Patient was hospitalized twice … patient has not recovered from symptoms." (ID: 318052)
 • A 19-year-old girl with no medical history immediately experienced side effects after receiving the Gardasil vaccine. Within eleven days her symptoms included "Aggression, Arthralgia, Complex partial seizures, Confusional state, Convulsion, Crying, Dizziness, Epilepsy, Fatigue, Feeling abnormal, Grand mal convulsion, Immediate post-injection reaction, Irritability, Myalgia, Nausea, Pain, Postictal state, Somnolence, Syncope, Tremor, and Unresponsive to stimuli." (ID: 320598)
 • "Two weeks after the third dose, the patient developed a complication. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance but passed away during the transport from an unknown cause…Upon arrival in ER unresponsive, pupils fixed and dilated, no cardiac activity. Resuscitation unsuccessful and patient expired." (ID: 314769)

"The FDA is supposed to be a guardian of public health, and yet the agency continues to turn a blind eye to what seems to be an extremely serious public health problem. The public relations push for Gardasil by Merck, politicians and public health officials needs to pause so that these adverse reactions can be further studied," said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. "The already serious problems associated with Gardasil seem to be getting worse. No one should require this vaccine for young children."

CDC and FDA downplay risks of Gardasil

Responding to concerns about Gardasil safety, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes on its website that “the HPV vaccine was studied in 5 clinical trials before it was licensed. There were over 21,000 girls and women ages 9 through 26 in these clinical trials.”  CDC states that more than 24 million doses of Gardasil were distributed in the United States as of May 1, 2009, with 13,758 VAERS reports of adverse events.

CDC also notes that it and the FDA have been “closely monitoring” the safety of Gardasil through three systems.

The main system of tracking Gardasil outcomes is VAERS, a “passive” system of data collection managed by the CDC and FDA. Anyone can submit reports of an “adverse event” or side effect online or by downloading a form. The website states that someone working with the VAERS system may contact the person or their health care provider for additional follow-up information.

While most reports on Gardasil appear to have been submitted by registered nurses or other clinical staff, one parent of a 20-year-old woman who died Nov. 15, 2008 submitted this report on Jan. 15, 2009:

“My daughter had her 3rd GARDASIL vaccine in Sept. She was a very healthy young lady, she went to take a shower and died. Autopsy report states undetermined death. There was no sign of the body to indicate a fall. She had pointed the shower head away from her and she got down on her knees and put her hand on the edge of the tub and passed away. This has been a living nightmare for her family. She is not the only one to have had problems and death from this vaccine. Please I beg you to take it off until it can be further tested. –not tested long enough to begin with.- There will be others that will die if the cause is not found.”

The CDC and FDA continue to recommend Gardasil injections. The CDC recommends the HPV vaccine be given systematically to all girls 11 and 12 years old, or before engaging in sexual activity, and to girls and women 13 through 26 years of age who did not receive it when they were younger.  The vaccine is given in a series of three injections over a six-month period.

“Based on all of the information we have today, CDC continues to recommend Gardasil vaccination for the prevention of 4 types of HPV,” states the CDC  website. “As with all approved vaccines, CDC and FDA will continue to closely monitor the safety of Gardasil.  Any problems detected with this vaccine will be reported to health officials, healthcare providers, and the public, and needed action will be taken to ensure the public's health and safety.”

Merck has actively promoted Gardasil through TV ads aimed at the public and through Congressional lobbying. Several state legislatures have attempted to enact mandatory Gardasil vaccinations for adolescent girls. As of March of 2009, 12 states have proposed HPV-related legislation or resolutions, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Merck is also seeking the FDA’s approval of Gardasil for the inoculation of boys and older women.  Gardasil sales reached $1.5 billion in 2007.

If you knew what you were talking about you would know that the FDA VAERS system (vaccine adverse events registry) is a reporting system where any and all adverse events in anyone who is vaccinated with anything get sent.

There is no causality associated with the adverse events, it is simply a listing of the adverse events in people who were vaccinated. Many of the adverse experiences would have happened anyway - for example - a subject with epilepsy gets the vaccine, and then has a seizure. News outlets report this as vaccine related, when in reality she had epilepsy.

Articles like this do a disservice to the general public who does not understand how these adverse events are reported.

SV: I don't know what higher authority informed you that there "is no causality associated with the adverse events." Are you 100 percent certain? The families whose perfectly healthy children were affected by the vaccine would love to know.

My article suggests public health authorities should acknowledge and investigate these reports rather than dismiss them as a tiny percentage of all vaccinations. Perhaps they should stop pushing for mandatory vaccines until all reports are reviewed and the cause of death or illness is explained. The public deserves this.

It's a fact that VAERS is a voluntary reporting system. One wonders how many events are not submitted since it isn't mandatory.

I stated numerous times that VAERS is a voluntary reporting system, at one point stating that "Anyone can submit reports of an “adverse event” or side effect online or by downloading a form."
Thanks to Judicial Watch which filed legal action to obtain the reports, anyone can now review them.

It's irresponsible to dismiss the VAERS reports. It's the only documentation (outside of the pharmaceutical company-sponsored clinical trials) of outcomes available. If VAERS reports have no value, why have them at all?

Finally, women took estrogen-based hormone replacement therapy for menopause symptoms for 30 or 40 years before researchers discovered a connection with breast cancer. As a result, many women no longer take estrogen and breast cancer has declined. Cancer experts say it is because of the decline in HRT use. http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKROB47731420070824

Check out the book “The HPV Vaccine Controversy: Sex, Cancer, God and Politics” authored by Shobha S. Krishnan, M.D, Barnard college, Columbia University. It is written without the influence of any pharmaceutical companies or special interest groups. The book educates both professionals and the public about HPV infections, the diseases they cause and the role/ controversies surrounding the new vaccines. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA, June 17th 2009) calls the book superb and a terrific contribution to the field. It is available at amazon.com, Barnes and Noble .com and through international distributors. Link to the book: http://www.greenwood.com/catalog/C35011.aspx

SV is misinformed. I'm writing from New Zealand where I initially considered Gardasil for my daughter. What I uncovered about this vaccine shocked me into setting up a website www.offtheradar.co.nz for other mums and their daughters to access information that health professionals are knowingly withholding from us. For SV's information, and others, Dr Diane Harper who headed the clinical trials for Gardasil, has now asked that vaccinations cease. She has major concerns over safety issues, and the way Gardasil is being administered, as well as Mercks aggressive marketing. Dr Harper asked the New Zealand Govt not to proceed with the vaccination programme here, because of her "credible" concerns. They have chosen to ignore her. This vaccine has nothing to do with womens health, but everything to do with profit and population control. So please check out my website www.offtheradar.co.nz for all the information I've uncovered and am still uncovering

My 13 year daughter missed almost the entire school year last year because of the Gardasil vaccine. Because of Gardasil, she was one less child, one less student, and possibly could have been one less daughter. She was vaccine injured and is being treated by Wake Forest Medical Center and Duke University Children's hospital. She was given this vaccine by her pediatrician who highly recommended it. Within 2 weeks after taking the last dose, she was taken down almost completely. She went from being well with no previous illnesses to being sick 97% of the time. She was in this state for around 5 months. The worst part is that doctors do not understand vaccine injuries and when they occur and the injured are pretty much on their own to research and treat the symptoms. The vaccine injury has caused my child to struggle for a year and least important, has also cost thousands of dollars in medical expenses. In my opinion, the benefits do not outweigh the risks and I do not want my daughter to be one less because of this vaccine. Parent should investigate before you vaccinate because there are a lot of sick girls out there who would agree, it is not worth it. The CDC and FDA need to investigate the side effects of vaccines, because basically, the public is own their own in this fight. Our government is not doing their job in this area.

Anon, I checked out the summary/reviews of the book, “The HPV Vaccine Controversy: Sex, Cancer, God and Politics.” It appears to be an attempt to muddy the waters regarding vaccine safety by introducing a straw man argument. The co-author says she had her daughter vaccinated and her summary suggests that those who oppose the HPV vaccine must be anti-sex, anti-choice, etc. Huh? This is a straw man. We should be able to discuss the health dangers without suggesting that you are a liberal if you support the vaccine or a conservative if you oppose it. That is marginalization and highly innacurate!

Of my three daughters, two were vaccinated. One has been diagnosed with HPV, while another suffered severe and unexplained weight loss starting two weeks after her first injection of the Merck HPV vaccine. She was hospitalized for two weeks. Doctors could not explain the weight loss. After three years of scanning all data available to the public, I'm placing my bets that the antigen is not the problem. There is a valid link between adverse reactions and an aluminum adjuvant contained in the vaccine to hasten the body's immune response. Less of the antigen is needed to produce more antibodies when adjuvants are present. But many people like my daughter have severe reactions to the introduction of aluminum through injection. Julie, Rosemary and Karen,
A million thanks for sharing your stories and what you've learned during your experience with the vaccine. I've read numerous other personal stories in news reports and individual blogs that describe adverse events following the HPV vaccine. It seems clear that the FDA and CDC need to act on and respond to the 10s of thousands of adverse events reported through VAERS. Karen wrote on her blog that she has not heard of one instance where the CDC or FDA followed up for more information following a submittal to the VAERS. Maybe parents will need to press their elected officials to pass legislation requiring a followup of every girl and young woman that has received the vaccination to date. (They are not getting an accurate picture based on voluntary reporting alone.) Because the FDA approved the vaccine and it and the CDC promote vaccinating an entire generation, it's the least that should be required. Parents and those of legal age considering the vaccine should be given all the information, including a summary of the VAERS reports.
Anyone wanting to explore this issue further should visit Julie's and Karen's blogs. They've done a ton of research while trying to find answers to what went wrong.

I must say this is most disstressing. My daughter just had her first Gardasil shot last week. In order to enter the 7th grade she had to have boosters of all her shots. Her doctor assured us that she needed this shot even though I already expressed concern over this new drug. I mean how many 11 and 12 year old girls contract HPV anyway. I will definetly be watching my daughter closely and contacting her doctor as well.

Greeting. Keep the good works comming. Help me! I can not find sites on the: . I found only this - stock market picks. Misleading to the fund, container picks allow shares to surface appearing to the method in bad trading, mostly they are not more missing than the prompting ratio of a other show. But company a is majority of the thus charitable frequency definition. Waiting for a reply :-), Shiro from Bangladesh.

I wonder if the vaccine will turn out to be this century's version of that drug taken by so many women in the mid-20th century (I've blanked out on the name of it) -- the one that rendered that rendered their daughters almost infertile, if not actually so. My cousin is one of those "daughters", and cannot have children as a result.
