Interviews, news and observations on the economic and political aspects of the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic.

By and large, U.S. media has shown a lack of curiosity about the economic and political aspects of the H1N1 drama.

The view from out here in the Midwest is that major commercial media considers coverage of the economic and political realities of the H1N1 pandemic story to be "conspiracy theory." This unwritten code has, of course, prevented robust investigation into the financial gains of those promoting vaccines as well as the integrity of the data and planning efforts delivered by national and international health officials.

CBS News is a notable exception for its investigation of the official numbers which, according to CBS research, are quite inflated.

Smaller independent news sources have filled other gaps in coverage, but smaller budgets also means a smaller pulpit.

As H1N1 news winds down and its analysis heats up, we leave you with these now and then comments by WHO Director-General Chan which demonstrate the semantic differences between "lab-confirmed" and "confirmed."

According to the WHO's lab-confirmed cases, the H1N1 virus has killed 12,799 people worldwide as of Fri. Jan. 8. That’s a much lower number than the one Chan quoted on June 11 when she made the pandemic announcement. At that time Chan said: “The virus is contagious, spreading easily from one person to another, and from one country to another. As of today, nearly 30,000 confirmed cases have been reported in 74 countries.”
